Sweden - Norway - Shetland and back 2024
1. Stockholm-Kalmar-Malmö-Gothenborg 3-13 May 10 days 530 Nm
We start by sailing through one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world, the one in Stockholm with more than 30 000 islands. After the sheltered waters next to the islands we will head straight down towards Kalmar. We may experience some tough sailing on the way down since the Baltic sea is known for it´s short waves. Kalmar castle with origin in the 12th century has played a huge role as the capitol of the Kalmar union of Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the Middle Ages as a counterweight to the German Hanseatic League. The castle is a vivid part of the picturesque city's everyday life with weddings, exhibitions, restaurant and so forth. We plan to stop by Kalmar one day.
The next stop is Malmö where the Eurovision song contest will take place during our visit. The worlds largest song contest is an experience of a lifetime. Malmö is a vibrant and dynamic city and we will go all in to take part in the Party of the year. You need to book Your tickets by Yourself. They are sold very quickly.
Last stop on the first leg is Gothenburg, Sweden´s second largest city embedded in a picturesque archipelago. City of sea, salt and sailors. Gothenburg has good connections both by airplane and train. The whole Swedish coast is beautiful with a lot of old characteristic lighthouses.
2. Gothenborg-Lillesand, Norway-Stavanger, Norway 14-22 May 8 dagar 270 Nm
After crossing the North Sea we arrive in Lillesand, described in the pilot book as 'a narrow sheltered inner lead of almost unreal beauty'. Further round to the west is Egersund, a small fishing village with a statue of a nude nymph guarding the entrance to the harbor. Weather permitting, hopefully we have time to enjoy these small islands.
We cruise upwards along the spectacular Norwegian coast with mountains and fjords. Stavanger is the oil capitol of Norway, but also a perfect jumping-off point for nature based adventures. There is the exciting Lysefjord, a 26 mile (42 km) long fjord that is over 400 m deep. You will see the breath taking Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) a 25 m square mountain plateau 604 m above sea level with 3 vertical sides. Depending on the weather we will either have a possibility to make a bus trip to the Preikestolen or we will sail there to see it from the sea. We can promise some dramatic scenery!
3. Stavanger, Norway-Lerwick, Shetland, Great Britain-Stavanger, Norway 25 May-3 June 10 dagar 230 Nm Alternative along on the Norwegian coast.
Weather and wind will dictate our course as we sail into the North Sea. Expect variable weather and lots of navigational challenges as we traverse the oil rigs and depressions. Weather permitting, we head towards Lerwick in the Shetland islands.
Shetland offers adventure and a return to nature – with epic coastal hikes, deserted white-sand beaches and a rich array of wildlife, from otters and orcas to Shetland ponies and bustling gannet colonies. Shetland has clear Viking and Scandinavian influences.
The city of Lerwick , small town, has been welcoming folk from all over Europe and the world for centuries. It's able to pull off events such as the largest fire festival in Europe or host the Tall Ships Races. Lerwick feels like surprisingly cosmopolitan picturesque island capital. Hopefully the winds are favorable for us, so we can enjoy Shetland islands for a couple of days. Otherwise, we will explore the dramatic Norwegian coast before returning to Stavanger.
4. Stavanger, Norway-Skagen, Denmark 5-10 June 5 days, 220 Nm
In Skagen two seas meet each other culminating at the tip of the sand peninsula. The large beach area furthest out on Grenen, is constantly moving and growing because the strong currents are carrying sand and gravel, 1 km during the last 100 years. There is frequently occurring lagoons – attracting both playful children and adults, as well as waders (birds). Due to the strong and extremely dangerous currents, bathing is strictly prohibited. There is said to be a special light that has drawn painters there for centuries.
5. Skagen, Denmark-Bornholm, Denmark-Stockholm 11-20 June 9 days, 544 Nm
Now we are sailing in calmer waters between Denmark
and Sweden. We are passing under the bridge connecting Sweden to the rest of
the Europe and plan to make a one day stop at the Danish Island of Bornholm way
in the Baltic sea. There is Europes largest castle ruin Hammershus. Bornholm is
famous for its smokehouses used for smoking herring the true taste of Bornholm.
The
Medieval Centre of Bornholm is a historical visitors' center spread over
fourteen hectares of beautiful terrain. At the center you can see, smell and
feel the Middle Ages come alive. See the watermill with the large millstone
turn grain into flour, and see rural cottages, a forge, livestock, an archery
range, soldiers, a cannon and more. The fortified nobleman's farm on the hilltop looms
against the sky.
The
impressive fortress is still being expanded, and today it includes palisades, a
gate tower, battlement walkways, a chapel, a refuge tower, a kitchen house and,
finally the nobleman's own house.
